*riˀ-at- - lung (SED I No. 224)

Usually compared to Akk. irtu, Ugr. ˀirt. ‘breast’; reconstruction of two different roots probably related by metathesis (cf. *ˀir(r)-at- ‘chest, breast’) is preferable.

rāˀtā, raˀtā, rātā - lung (LSyr. 705, SL 1425)
Arabic
riˀat- - lungs (BK 1 798, Lane 1001)
Cf. also wāriyat-, waraⁿ ‘lung disease’ (BK 2 1526). In these forms, w- could be regarded as a secondary element (a triconsonantizer?) if not for a comparison to Berb. and C. Chad. terms in w- which makes one suppose them to be a vestige of the old Afras. form *wVray/ˀ-.
