*raˀ/w/hy- - kind of bird (SED II No. 187)

Phonetically and semantically rather diverse. Akk. ru ‘eagle’ attested in Hh. XIV 137 (= A.MUSEN) is hardly relevant for comparison: as rightly suggested in CAD R 392, it must be “ variant, perhaps erroneous, for aru” (present in another variant of the same entry of Hh.).

Hebrew
rāˀā - red kite (HALOT 1161)
HapLeg in Dt 14.13 (forbidden). Absent from the corresponding section of Lv 11 and, therefore, not fully reliable (appearing as dāˀā in some manuscripts).
Arabic
rahw- - crane (BK 1 943, Lane 1174, LA XV 342)
Tigre
rawya - stork (WTS 159)
Tigrinya
rawya - kind of a very large vulture; falcon, sparrow hawk, kite (TED 591)
