ǯīfat- ‘corpse, carrion, especially in putrefaction’ (BK 362) — < *ǯiwf(-at)-, where ī cannot be explained from Sem. *gawp-. Cf. also ǯyf ‘to exhale a fetid odor (said of a corpse)’ (BK 362).
