nəˀāl - sandals (ML 278)

perhaps borrowed from Arabic

PCS
*naˁl- - shoe, sandal (Kogan 2015: 215)

PCS *naˁl- ‘shoe’ could be plausibly connected with *nˁl ‘to lock, to secure,’ but this verbal root is too sparsely attested: Hbr. nˁl ‘to secure, to bolt’ (HALOT 705), manˁūl, minˁāl ‘bar, bolt’ (ibid. 602). One cannot exclude that *naˁl- represents a PCS replacement of a more ancient common designation of “shoe” *ŝaˀn-.
