Following Brockelmann’s hypothesis (Brockelmann 1939, 666; adopted in CAD B 28, Abraham-Sokoloff 2011, 27), Akk. bagani is borrowed from Aramaic
*bgn ‘to invoke, outcry’ . The Akk. form can be tentatively normalized as baganē, st. constr. pl. of *bagn-, with the a-insertion.
