The Akk. word is probably related to Sum. BIBAD(UZ.TUR)/bab(b)az(a) (on the Sum. word see Steinkeller 1992:57, Veldhuis 2004:223f.). Steinkeller and Veldhuis consider the Sum. lexeme to be a loanword from Akkadian, but the opposite direction of borrowing is also conceivable. It is also possible that both words are of onomatopoeic origin.
