PS
*SVlw- - quail (SED II No. 195)
No satisfactory explanation for the irregular sibilant correspondences in the present root has been suggested so far. In LSyr. and LS the Hbr. form is thought to be an Arabism but the reverse development is proposed in TWAT VII 802. An Aramaism in Arabic is suggested in Jeffery 1938 177 (as rightly observed by Jeffery, salwā in the Qurˀān is not attested outside the rendering of the corresponding Biblical story). It is important to stress that the correspondence Hbr. ŝ ~ Soq. š is particularly difficult: it does not fit either PS *ŝ or PS *ŝₓ whereas no mutual influence can be supposed in this case.
