Translated simply as “a bird” in CAD U-W 226. Discussed in detail in Landsberger 1961:15 (cf. also Salonen 1973:185). Landsberger tends to accept Th. Bauer’s opinion according to which u. is to be analyzed as a diminutive formation derived from the main Akk. term for eagle erû. At the same time, he points out to the remarkable similarity of u. to Hit. haran and related IE terms. Whereas both suggestions deserve further study, there is hardly any obstacle for a direct comparison of u. to Arb. γaran which is both phonetically and semantically unproblematic.
