kélé - to come home (JL 131)

Proto-MSA
*klˀ - to turn back (Kogan 2015:560)

The origin of Proto-MSA *klˀ ‘to turn back’ is uncertain. In LS 218, Leslau compares it to PS *kilˀ- ‘both’ (“faire une chose encore une fois”), which is worth considering (cf. perhaps Arb. klˀ ‘to turn one’s eye repeatedly to a thing, to look at it again and again,’ Lane 2623). At the same time, an ultimate connection with PS *klˀ ‘to hold, to restrain’ (so Leslau in CDG 282) cannot be excluded, cf. the meanings “to keep back,” “to hold back” in Gez. kalˀa (CDG 281) and Akk. kalû (CAD K 95). See further Tgr. kälkälä ‘to encircle, to keep back’, Tna. kälkälä ‘to forbid, to prohibit’, Amh. käläkkälä ‘to prevent, to hinder’, Tna. kolälä ‘to tour, to go around in a circle’ (Kogan 2015:560).
