Note the meaning development ‘hip’ > ‘girdle’ > (1) ‘to gird oneself, to be equipped (for war), to set out’ > ‘warrior’, and > (2) ‘to surround, fortify, strengthen’ > ‘strong’: Pho. ḥlṣ ‘chief warrior’ [T 106], Hbr. ḥālūṣ ‘equipped for military service’ [KB 322], Hbr. pB. ḥlṣ ‘to surround, fortify; to gird, arm’ [Ja. 472]; Syr. ḥəlīṣā ‘fortis’ [Brock. 237].
