Likely related to the verbal root *ḫmr ‘to foam, to ferment,’ attested, outside CS, also in Tigre and MSAOutside Aramaic, it is only Arb. ḫamr- that functions as the main term for “wine”. Attestations of PCS *ḫamr- in the Canaanite area are marginal, the main terms with the meaning “wine” always go back to *wayn-.
Ugr. ḫmr is attested twice (1.3 i 16 and 1.23:6), in the latter passage in the peculiar combination ḫmr yn ‘sparkling wine’ (DUL 396), paralleled by ḥmr yn in Phoenician (DNWSI 383).
