The origin is uncertain, but, as surmised already in LSyr. 451 and HALOT 730, this root cannot be separated from *nšb and *nšp, perhaps also *npš with comparable meanings (cf. SED I Nos. 47ᵥ, 49ᵥ, 51ᵥ).
